Mentor Others with Tools from God's Word
Have you ever been in a mentoring situation and the person wants you to make the decision for them?
A woman whom I had been mentoring asked to come and talk with me after she received a difficult health diagnosis, and her doctor was recommending an aggressive path of facing her issue.
Just tell me what to do, she said as soon as she walked into my house.
Let’s sit down and have a cup of tea and talk through this. We sat together in the living room, and I grabbed my Bible.
Pointing Others to God
As mentors we don’t tell those we are working with what to do, but we encourage them to ask God for wisdom, listen to what he is speaking, and then respond in obedience.
We sat together for an hour, and I walked her through the tools I teach in The Volcano course based on Philippians 4:8. Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. . . think this way.
I call this tnrpla-ing. (pronounced ta-ner-pa-la-ing) T = True, N = Noble, R = Right, etc.
Each word in Philippians 4:8 is paired with 2 questions.
- True and Noble point you to who God is and who you are in Christ. Immediately after answering the questions, your posture will change, your heart will stop beating so fast, and you will be ready to listen to what God says to you.
- Right, Pure, and Lovely are all about listening and obeying.
- Admirable describes what God is doing and how he is molding and transforming you.
- And when you think this way, it is excellent and worthy of praise!
I've Got My Answer!
By the time my mentee and I finished working through the Volcano tool she looked at me and said, now I know exactly what I am supposed to do!
I had led her through a healthy response to a volcano exploding in her life and what she realized was that God had already been speaking to her but because of panic and fear she had been unable to hear his sweet words and direction.
Lead them through a healthy response to a volcano.
Learn to TNRPLA (pronounced ta-ner-pa-la)
Do you want to learn this tool – for your own life, but also those you mentor?
Since my daughter Kristin and I developed The Volcano course, we have personally tnrpla-ed a zillion times! So often I have exclaimed, if only I had known how to do this years ago when. . .
Beth works with the youth in her church and wrote this note to me:
I did The Volcano course in the spring of 2020 with eight teenagers. We began at the end of February and right in the middle, COVID lockdowns occurred.
That’s when it really became real.
There were real-life, at-the-moment situations that we were all dealing with.
We switched to Zoom meetings (they all wanted to!) and talked a lot about the tools in The Volcano.
I believe that it helped everyone to put into perspective the events around us and how to process them.
Also, my daughter was only 9 at the time, but I still bring it up with her and it is something I plan on incorporating into our homeschool journey.
Volcanoes in Real-Life
You may not be experiencing a volcano like when the world shut down in 2020, but there are events that are exploding in your life every week. Some are small, others big. Sometimes every knows about it and other times it’s private. Some volcanoes are caused by you and sometimes by others.
What you need to know is how to align your thoughts, words, and actions under the Lordship of Jesus and allow him to step into your situation. Cooperate with the work of the Holy Spirit and replace your unhealthy thinking with what is True, Noble, Right, Pure, Lovely, and Admirable.
