3 Things the Bible Says About Our Thoughts
Most of us pay close attention to our physical health. But we also need to pay attention to our mental and emotional health – and that starts with what is going on with our thoughts.
The Bible has a lot to say about healthy and unhealthy thinking. Here are 3 truths to remember:
#1 Choices Begin with Thinking
According to Deuteronomy 30:19-20 there are choices between life and death, blessings and curses, and God invites you to CHOOSE LIFE.
Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life.
How do you make the choice for life?
- Loving the Lord your God
- Obeying Him
- Committing yourself firmly to Him
What is the key to your life?
You are to love God with every passion, all your energy, and every thought that is within you!
Love the Lord your God with every passion of your heart, will all the energy of your being, and with every thought that is within you.
Matthew 22:37 TPT
Choices begin with thinking, and your thinking determines your destiny!
#2 Your Thinking Shouldn't Impress You
As smart as you are, you don't know it all!
Do your thoughts tend to lean toward your own opinion before they look to God?
Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.Proverbs 3:5-6 MSG
Lean into God and don't be impressed with your own wisdom.
#3 Musing Leads to Fusing
Have you ever tried to hold your words so you don't say anything wrong - but it just gets hotter and hotter in your mind and eventually your musing lights a fire?
I said, “I will keep watch over my ways so that I do not sin with my tongue;
I will keep watch over my mouth as with a muzzle. . . ”I was mute and silent, I refused to say even something good, and my pain was stirred up.
My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue.
Psalm 39:1-3
What you meditate on lights a fire within you that will begin to fuse into an attitude that eventually comes out in words and actions.
Some of these fires are damaging and you wish you could take your words and actions back. Dr. Quentin McGhee writes:
"Meditate on the wrong that someone has done to you and this will light a fire of self-pity, malice, and unforgiveness in you.
Nurse a grudge and it will grow into a root of bitterness.
Meditate on sexual temptations and this will light a fire of evil sexual desires."
Other fires come from healthy meditation and are clean and good, producing health in your life.
Dr. Quentin McGhee adds:
"Think about a friend, co-worker, or family member who believes in you and this will light a fire of encouragement that warms your heart.
Focus on God’s faithfulness to you and this will light a fire of faith and confidence to trust God.
Meditate on God’s forgiveness for your sins and this will light a fire that inspire you to forgive others.
Recount past victories and this will spark courage to win again."
Learn to identify both the “musing” thoughts in your mind, and the "fused" attitudes that have formed who your character.
